Tips for Taking Care of Your Puppy

Tips for Taking Care of Your Puppy

30 September 2015

Are you planning to bring a little canine home? Or Have you already adopted a little puppy? Puppies are really cute and adorable. Raising up a puppy is similar to raising up a child in some respect. If you want your little puppy to grow up into a devoted and well-behaved companion, who always provides unconditional love and care for you and your family, then you have to do a lot of work. You need to teach your puppy various things in order to grow him into a friendly and loyal adult. Make sure you make him learn all the doggy manners right from the beginning. Our veterinarians Mississauga have suggested a few things that every pet owner should keep on mind while raising up a puppy.

Puppy Proofing

Its all new environment for your little furbaby. He is energetic and wants to explore everything that you have in your home. In order to keep your puppy safe, make sure you puppy proof your home. Keep the household chemicals, toxic plants and other small items out of the reach of his paws. Provide a separate play area for him so that he can play there and stays safe.

Socialization

For the overall mental, physical and emotional development of your puppy, socialization is a must. Socialized dogs are less aggressive and are more calmer and friendlier. Make sure you take your puppy out and allow him to connect with other dogs. Socializing will make your dog comfortable and well-behaved around other animals and people. Take your puppy out on walks or you can also enroll him to obedience training classes.

Training

Make sure your puppy masters a few basic commands, such as Sit, Stay, Heel, Come and Lay Down. The ”puppyhood” is an ideal time for him to understand and learn all the necessary doggy manners. Crate training is also necessary and recommended by the veterinarians. Also, make your puppy used to having his teeth brushed, being bathed and nails clipped. You can seek a trainer’s help to make your puppy a well-mannered companion.

Veterinary Care

During the first year, you need to take your puppy to the vet for vaccination and proper physical examination. You can also consider spaying or neutering before your pup matures. Keep an eye on the overall health of your puppy and look for any potential sign of illness. Remember, puppies get sick quickly as their immune system is not so strong at this time, so you need to be extra careful.
